For the record, the conversation wasn’t technically part of the official announcements, and it was only when prompted by queries that Mun actually spoke about the topic. As you would expect, while Yoodo didn’t speak about the topic at great lengths, we did manage to find out a couple of things. Firstly, if and when it does become a reality, Yoodo says that the feature would be available on Apple’s iPhone first. The primary reason behind this choice boils down to the fact that, at this stage, only the select iPhones models support the digital SIM medium. Specifically, the iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR.
As for Android devices, the only phones in this ecosystem that currently support eSIM technology are the Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 3 series smartphones. And only through the search engine’s own Google Fi mobile service. Activation of the eSIM would also most likely be done through the scanning of a QR code. Mind you, that’s just one possible method of activation, and it goes without saying that Yoodo will be looking into other avenues for the sim delivery.
We also may not have to wait very long; when we asked for a general period of availability, Yoodo said that – while unconfirmed – it was aiming at a launch of the feature sometime during the first half of 2019. While we’re not holding out breath on Yoodo’s timeline, it’s very likely that the brand could beat its competitors to the finish line with it. Of course, that is barring any sudden announcements from said competitors about the topic.
