However, things slowly started to change after a massive backlash by people in the industry in 2009 when The Dark Knight failed to receive a Best Picture nom. The next serious push came in 2017 when Deadpool managed to get a Golden Globe nomination for Best Motion Picture – Musical/Comedy. In 2018, Logan received a Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar nomination, the first ever for a comic book movie. And finally, earlier this year, the glass ceiling shattered when Black Panther became the first comic book movie in history to receive a Best Picture Oscar nomination. Could Avengers: Endgame join the ranks of its MCU brethren Black Panther? According to the managing editor of Fandango, Erik Davis, Marvel/Disney has possibly already started an Oscar campaign for Endgame. Check out his tweet below:
— Erik Davis (@ErikDavis) May 2, 2019 I concur with Erik Davis. Endgame absolutely deserves a Best Picture Oscar nomination (and possibly a win too, depending on how the rest of the year shapes up). The film is both a huge financial success and beloved by critics and fans alike too. Watching the end credits roll, my eyes overflowing with tears of varying emotions, I let out a huge sigh of relief. Avengers: Endgame is absolutely, unequivocally bloody GREAT.
It is a wonderfully written, magnificently directed film that successfully managed to tie up and resolve more than a decade’s worth of longform storytelling. This isn’t just a fun movie (though it is very fun), it isn’t just a spectacle (though, it is indeed spectacular, worthy of its expensive IMAX ticket price); this is a blockbuster film that is dense, layered, consequential and emotionally harrowing. On top of that, the film is the pinnacle of today’s pop culture. It deserves proper recognition by The Academy.
