In an interview with ComicBook.com, Aladdin producer Dan Lin mentioned as much.

We are going to treat it the same way we treat the original Aladdin movie and not going to do a shot by shot remake of anything that’s been done before. We’re really looking at what’s been done before in the past and the home video, and there’s just more story to tell with the underlying materials. So without giving away too much, we are certainly exploring where we can go with this franchise.” First of all, fan letters? People actually still send fan letters as opposed to emails? But more importantly, we should note that the original 1992 Aladdin animated film hatched a sequel too. The film was titled The Return of Jafar and was Disney’s first-ever direct-to-video animated release. And yes, it’s kinda terrible but because it’s straight-to-video, nobody cares. Frankly, I would prefer if Disney didn’t remake their old films, especially the popular ones, and instead focus on original content. However, the box office receipts of these films indicate that I’m probably in the minority. So, all I can hope for are that these films turn out to be good.
